This project for the Masterplan Design of a new ‘Urban Park’ in Chirnside Park, on Melbourne’s outer-east for the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The triangular, sloping one hectare site wedged between a new housing estate and the Chirnside Park Shopping Centre, has a large wetland (which forms part of the local drainage catchment) which is central to the space. Local community, schools and youth collaborated to provide initial ideas and inspiration to developing a preliminary design. Key features of the preliminary design includes; a large, tiered accessible playspace with domed-play features, climbing, swings and accessible slide and sensory items. The design also includes informal recreation nodes (with furniture, shelter and spaces for community use) punctuating open lawn areas, garden beds and an urban forest (with informal nature play). The site provides a flexible hardstand area for commercial or community activity (coffee cart or mobile library) and there is a large artwork feature as part of the wetland and boardwalk system.
