The project at Occasional Care was completed in 2 stages. The first stage was the development of a sketch concept plan and the second a review of that concept plan in consultation with the centre staff and children, followed by design development, documentation and construction. The space needed to cater for a wide range of ages from 0-5 years (with older siblings sometimes also attending) and central to the space was the retention of the existing bridge and slide that the children use to view out to see trains and trucks go by. Key factors in the design for the staff were the creation of smaller spaces and introducing different levels and surfaces as well. The space had beautiful natural shade and the trees were incorporated into the design as well. Unique features include a new stage deck and bamboo shop-front counter, a new timber workbench and cubby space created under the bridge.
