The project at Wendouree Children’s Centre was in two stages. The first stage was an overall concept design for the redevelopment of the centre’s outdoor play areas alongside the expansion of the centre building in 2013. The second stage was the detailed design, documentation and construction of the Babies and Toddlers Outdoor Play Area in 2015-2016. The client was looking for a more user-friendly space for both children and staff that allowed for connections with the pre-school aged children next door. The design included a large decked area to extend the existing verandah, a new larger sand play area, grassed areas and a feature ‘peek-a-boo’ timber wall with perspex windows which allowed for interaction between the older children and younger children. The space was also expanded by moving the fencelines out further and revelling the site.
